Europe Discovers Pumped Storage Plants

The European Union is seeking to tackle the challenge of climate change by turning away from fossil fuels. Germany, for instance, wants to derive 50 % of its energy supply from renewable sources by the year 2050.

Also nuclear power, even though controversially debated especially in Austria, is still going strong.

Because the promotion of renewable energies, particularly wind power, results in a loss in base load capacity, pumped storage power plants are steadily gaining importance.

Their role in Europe’s energy policy was discussed in detail in a ÖWAV seminar on storage and pumped storage power plants in mid-November. The event, which attracted numerous high-ranking national and international experts, was hosted in conjunction with TU Graz, University of Innsbruck and TU Vienna. The festival hall of the latter served as venue for the event.
