Project for Reserve Supply Conduit from the Rímov Reservoir for Plav Water Purification Plant Successfully Completed

On 14 November 2003, the project for a Reserve Supply Conduit from the Rímov Reservoir for Plav Water Purification Plant was successfully completed.

The project with a total budget of CZK 37,010,894 was financed by the European Union, ISPA program (85 % of the total amount, i.e. CZK 31,459,260. HOCHTIEF VSB a.s. was the building contractor and the State Environmental Fund was the implementation agency.

The water supply reservoir in Rímov (on the Malse river) and the Plav water purification plant provide supplies of fresh water to a large region of Southern Bohemia, with almost 400,000 inhabitants.

During the floods in August 2002, the banks of the Malse river were destroyed as excessive amounts of water were discharged from the reservoir, including the pipeline feeding raw water to the Plav water purification plant, situated 8300 m from the reservoir.

Water also damaged a bridge over the Malse river which served as a support for the pipeline (DN 1400). The pipeline was damaged, too, and it became hazardous from the static point of view. The project helped remove the most critical link in the water supply system, i.e. by attaching a reserve conduit (DN 1000 mm, length: 870 m) to the damaged pipeline. The reserve pipeline was buried in a protected terrain, approx. 10 m from the river bank. There was a new crossing of the Malse river made for two conduits (DN 1000 mm, length: 300 m). This helped avoid the hazardous crossing along the bridge. The construction of the reserve supply conduit did not mean just a renewal of a damaged supply pipeline and removal of the consequences of the floods, but also a better protection of the water supply system in Southern Bohemia and its preparation for critical situations.

The residents of this region will no longer have to fear interruptions in the supply of water, even in situations resembling the floods of last August.

The objective of the Phare program is to prepare the CR for its accession into the European Union. Since 1990, there have been Phare projects at a total amount of approx. EUR 993.5 million approved for the CR. Within the ISPA program alone (for the financing of projects in transport and ecology infrastructure), approx. EUR 350 million have been approved since 2000, and within the SAPARD program (focusing on agriculture and development of rural areas), approx. EUR 70 million have been approved since 2000.

In 2002, the European Solidarity Fund approved another EUR 129 million as a help granted to the CR for its liquidation of loss caused by the floods. The total funds approved for the CR by EU have so far reached EUR 1,615 million. In addition, EIB provided the CR with a loan of EUR 400 million as a reaction to the floods in 2002.
