Hungary submitted her National Canalization and Wastewater Program satisfying the requirements of the 91/271 EEU directive. Hungary engaged itself, that until 2015 the 1737 settlements coming under the ruling of the decree, and 800 other small-size settlements will be supplied with sewer systems and treatment plants. The realization of the plan requires HUF 953 billion (EUR 4 billion), namely: HUF 700 billion for the sewer systems, HUF 252,6 billion for the treatment plants.
In the year 2004 for about HUF 75-85 billion 140-150 km newer sewers will be built. HUF 10-12 billion will go for enlargement of the capacity of the existing treatment plants. It allows joining 45-55 thousand new customers. This is the continuation of the tendencies of the recent years, when the number of the population living in apartments supplied with sewer systems risen 1,2% yearly.
In Budapest the sewer system serves about 90% of the population, but about half of the collected wastewater goes into the Danube without purification. The planed Budapest central plant on the Csepel Island (South-Budapest) will solve the problem soon.
The budget of the construction will be over HUF 131 billion (EUR 500 million), but the EU can provide help. According to the plan another plant on South-Buda will be constructed until 2010.
The most canalized comitat is Komarom-Esztergom (North-Transdanubia) with an amount 70%, the most backward is Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok (Great-Plan) with only 31,4%.
In 2004 much construction work supported by ISPA projects will be started. In this year for the building will be available HUF 32 billion (EUR 130 million) from EU founds. The cities which gained the supply are Győr, Szeged, Pécs, Sopron, Szombathely, Kecskemét, and Debrecen.
In the period 2004-2006 HUF 11,4 billion (EUR 50 million) are available from the structural founds for tenders in the field of canalization.
