Its activities are as follows:

• directs the activities of the Regional Directorates for Environment and Water
• is responsible for state investments over an investment value determined in other legal act
• organizes and co-ordinates the implementation of the tasks of the regional directorates in investment, maintenance and operative direction of territories and facilities owned by the state and in property management of the aforementioned directorates
• directs in states of emergency defined in other legal act the water supply by public facilities and the agricultural water supply
• acts as expert in administrative procedures in the field of environment, nature and water
• contributes to the preparation of politics, concepts and legal norms, to the Elaboration of comprehensive national Plans, as well as to the implementation of projects supported by international and Hungarian funds
• implementation of task related to the international co-operation, to the EU-membership, to drawing on international financial resources
• contributes to the implementation of operative tasks of the research and technical development
• contributes to the preparation and implementation of national and regional programs for communal sewage treatment
• implements the operative and coordinative tasks in the development and operation of environmental monitoring systems
• contributes to the analysis and evaluation of the environment status, as well as to the definition of aspects for establishment of quality standards for waters
• contributes to activities for enhancement of water quality, as well as to elaboration and implementation of plans for reduction of pollutant
• discharge into the waters contributes to implementation of air clarity projects
