Hydromatrix: Turbines for Power Station in Vienna

Power from renewable energy and enhancing the safety of supply for Austria’s capital are major targets.

A new small hydropower station in Nußdorf, a suburban district of Vienna, constitutes a further step in this direction. The new plant, for which the ground-breaking ceremony was recently held, will supplement the existing power stations Simmering, Donaustadt, and Leopoldau and generate approx. 24.6 million KWh annually.

This will supply 10,000 Viennese households with maximally clean energy. Partners in this important project – also in terms of the Kyoto Protocol – are Wien Energie Wienstrom, VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG, and EVN.

First considerations on the Nußdorf Project started already ten years ago, but only today – due to the impressively simple concept of the "Hydromatrix turbine" of VA TECH HYDRO – is it economically viable.

DI Dr. Franz Strohmer, board director of VA TECH HYDRO, explains the new technology: "A Hydromatrix turbine-generator unit (TG-unit) consists of an asynchronous generator, which is directly connected with the runner. The stator is designed as watertight casing box and bolted to the distributor.

For the regular oil change, neither the turbine chamber nor the TG-unit has to be lifted. The distributor with fixed guide vanes forms an integral part of the watertight generator housing. The unregulated runner is cast together with the hub out of aluminium bronze in one piece. The integration in already existing structures provides for a high economic viability."

Consisting of a 30m-long, approx. 12m- wide and 7m-high over-flow hollow body weir with attached hydraulically operated spillway gates, the new Nußdorf small hydropower plant – costing approximately e 15 million – will be equipped with twelve HYDROMATRIX® turbine-generator units by VA TECH HYDRO.

The new technology will be built downstream of the Schemerlbrücke and is thus practically invisible. Thus, the architectural charm of the “Nußdorfer Wehr”, classified as a historical monument, is preserved! The new HYDROMATRIX® plant of VA TECH HYDRO shall start operation in summer 2005.
