 The Causes
Floods and Flood Control in Hungary

The 151 flood basins along the Large River Systems in Hungary are flood-prone areas. The floods on the Rivers Danube and Tisza are stemming – mostly – from catchments beyond Hungary’s territory, in the Carpathians and in the Northern and Eastern slopes of the Alps.

Beyond these flood basins there are large areas at risk of inundation along the valleys of the hilly and mountainous small watercourses and on the flat lowlands.

Both of these two types of land areas at risk are endangered by local precipitation activity when the precipitation depth exceeds a critical value (runoff capacity of the bed of the small water-course because there is no flood defence system and/or the infiltration capacity of the subsoil.

Mainly if simultaneously the runoff capacity of the excess-water canal is also insufficient along the flatlands). Present study deals with the flood prone areas of the Large River Systems only.
