Failure of the Reservoir Dam on Kemence Creek
Damaged Bridge in the Valley

In June 1999 heavy rains fell over the entire territory of the country, but especially over the hilly and mountain areas.

The Ipoly Valley

In the second half of June, the creek Tarna and her tributaries, the rivers Zagyva and Ipoly carried already flood discharges, when a violent storm brought ample rainfall over the catchment area of the Kemence and Bemece creecks in the Börzsöny Mountains.

The flood triggered on the Kemence Creek has caused has wrought heavy losses in the narrow valley and the reservoir built on the creek.

A committee, the findings of which have thrown light on some fundamental issues related to the failure, which – fortunately – has not caused heavy losses and claimed no human life, investigated the circumstances of the abnormal event.
