Kleehaufel waterwork
At the moment, Vienna is supplied almost exclusively with spring water. To ensure the supply of the city even in case of one of the spring water main being out of operation, the water of the Danube Island, Nussdorf and Lobau well fields is to be improved in a central plant to reach the very highest quality standards and safety requirements. After completion, the new waterwork will produce 172,800 m3 of drinking water per day.
Moosbrunn waterwork
After a time-consuming examination of various legal issues, the Moosbrunn waterwork finally obtained an operating license in 1998. This installation disposes of two horizontal filtering wells and one water reservoir. In the next years, a water treatment plant – i.e. in addition to treatment with chlorine dioxide – is to be constructed as well. In long-term operation, it will thus be possible to supply 30,000 m3 per day; in short-term operation, up to 64,000 m3 per day. The construction of the treatment plant will probably begin in 2002.
Rehabilitation of reservoirs
The Vienna Waterworks operate 32 reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 1.65 million m3 of drinking water. The varying construction dates and architectural and technical characteristics of these structures make their maintenance very cost-intensive. The reservoirs are situated in densely populated urban areas or in architectural protection zones, which do not allow changing their location. Due to their – partly valuable – architecture, these buildings require both costly maintenance work and ongoing technical updates to ensure their compliance with the state of the art in technology.
