The Favoriten Water Tower
In the autumn of 1999, the Water Tower in Favoriten on “Wienerberg” celebrated its 100th birthday. Before the 2nd Spring water main was built, the tower supplied the high-lying areas of the 10th and 12th municipal districts with drinking water. Today, this building is under monument protection and used as an exhibition venue.
The Old Installation Chamber
When today’s Meiselmarkt shopping mall was still a water reservoir, the installation chamber served as access route to this reservoir. At the same time, it contained inlet and outlet pipes plus shutting-off devices called valves.
Today, the installation chamber has been transformed into a modern conference hall. The entrance gate and windows as well as other architectural elements were reconstructed on the basis of historical plans.
The Hackenberg Water Reservoir
The Hackenberg Water Reservoir is definitely one of the most attractive reservoirs of Vienna. It is situated in the midst of an allotment garden development in the western part of Vienna. Apart from its charming exterior, it also offers a magnificent view of the city. This arcaded building decorated with “Jugendstil” elements took up operation in 1910 and has a storage capacity of 11,550 m3.
Vienna’s drinking fountains
On the elegant Kärntner Straße; right in front of the Lugner City shopping mall; on the popular Mariahilfer Straße; at the Schönbrunn Zoo and in more than 25 other spots of Vienna, the curious (and thirsty) will find drinking fountains – and each of them is unique. Their common denominator is the letter “W” formed by water jets, which stands for Vienna (in German “Wien”), water and waterworks.
The drinking fountains were designed by the sculptor Hans Muhr. Every single fountain was sponsored by a different Viennese enterprise. Moreover, Vienna’s drinking fountains can be found as symbols of water in other international metropolises as well, such as Stockholm, Berlin, Chicago and Hong Kong.
