KANIS as geographical information system
A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a combination of position and object data in an electronic data processing programme structure. The advantages of applying such a structure to the management of the sewerage network follow from unified management of the whole network.
- Various possibilities of representing the network or its parts depending on the particular problem formulation
- Overlapping statistics for complex problem formulation
- Integration of various data banks into the overall system
The KANIS system
A digital sewer register is the base of a sewerage information system. It includes all position data of the network, consisting of connections and system nodes. Connection means the unified section of the sewerage network between two system nodes. System nodes are logical nodes in the system as e.g. entrance shafts, profile changes etc.. Data giving the position, size, state, maintenance etc. are assigned to these graphical objects.
Gathering and maintaining the digital data
Arc-shaped connections are a speciality of the Viennese sewerage network. On the contrary to many standard sewer information systems that can only take into account straight connections between two shafts, it was a basic requirement on the Viennese system to be able to represent and store also curvilinear connections. This circumstance and the possibility of flexible adaptation of applications in view of various requirements on the sewer register led to the decision to develop an own sewer register system and its maintenance.
Because of these requirements the graphical editor AutoCAD2000 Map and the data bank Access 2000 were our choice. Data linkage is obtained through the AutoCAD Map Object Data.
This programme package enables very easy management and inclusion of new data on one hand and is very flexible in integrating new problem formulations on the other hand. Import and export interfaces are a substantial part of such an own solution, as they must enable the exchange of data with other users and applications.
KANIS as internal planning base
The complete sewerage network in a unified data bank is the base of efficient, quick and simple planning of all work concerning the sewerage network. This includes:
- Reporting about cleaning and inspections of grindable sewers
- Data concerning damages
- Inspections with cameras to document the state of pipe channels
- Indirect inlets
- Representation of the building data bank to record the building programme
- Customer data
Information from the archives of plans
Customers, who until the end of 2001 had to obtain copies of analogue plans in the plan archives, now can obtain a defined part of the plan by just giving e.g. their addresses. The customer obtains unified data either printed in analogue form or according to wish in digital form.
KANIS on the Internet
The City of Vienna offers, quite uniquely on the whole world, digital data of the sewerage network for downloading from the Internet.
The required part of the plan can be selected e.g. by finding its address and position. The object data can be downloaded in dxf.format compatible with AutoCAD or in the ARC/INFO compatible Shape Format. Thus the data are at immediate disposal for the planner in the Regional Reference System Vienna (Raeumliches Bezugssystem Wien) and can be used directly together with all planning documents of the City of Vienna.
