The water work lasting for centuries – by shortening the winding dikes by several hundred kilometers – conquered bays from the sea. Hungarian river barrages are dwarfed by some of the constructed weirs. Just as proud as the Dutch can be of the achievements of their fight against sea waters, Hungarians can be proud of the areas conquered by the implemented river regulation flood control works – which in their size considerably exceed the similar areas in the Netherlands.
The regulation of the Tisza-Valley and the successful implementation of our protection work against floods, ranging over several decades, has been a series of historic deeds.
The dikes erected in the flood areas of the Danube and Tisza rivers in Hungary by several generations, today protect 2,5 million inhabitants of 700 settlements (for example the towns of Gy?r, Esztergom, Mohács, Szeged, Gyula).
They protect from the violent waters one-third of Hungary's agricultural areas (1,8 million hectares), 32% of the railway lines, 15% of the public roads, 2000 plants and 30% of Hungary's national product.
