The politician has reminded that the country is to keep a memorial day in remembrance of the cyanide spill that affected river Tisza, on the first day each February in compliance with the resolution adopted by the Parliament in summer 2000. As known, on January 30, 2000, following a dike rupture of the grand storage lake of Aurul SA, of Nagybánya, Romania, an amount of 100 thousand m3 water-soluble, heavy metal cyanide complex spill made its way into river Tisza and then Danube to eventually arrive at the Black Sea.
The amount of cyanide so released is estimated to be around one hundred tons, bringing vast destruction in the flora and fauna of the rivers affected. Mr Illés expressed his hopes that severe judgements, following ongoing legal proceedings, will have a deterrent effect for the future and that those responsible will pay damages.
