Gorbach reminded of the considerable damage caused by the floods in May 1999 and August 2000. Consequently investments in respective preventive measures were increased continuously during the last years: 6.7 million EURO in 1999, 7.05 million EURO in 2000 and 7.27 million EURO in the year 2001.
It is especially pleasing for Gorbach, that stakeholders of the Ill project are financing the project by advanced money. A large part of the expenses will be financed in advance by the town of Feldkirch and refunded next year, as soon as means of the Federal Government and the Country of Vorarlberg will be liquid. One part of the costs is carried by the Vorarlberger Illwerke and the Federal Road Administration as special contributors.
Gorbach emphasised he importance of revitalisation measures especially by stating: "In the past flood prevention was affected by hard building methods that strongly damaged the ecological function of waters. On the contrary, at present attention is paid to find and realise a balance between ecological and flood protecting objectives." (Source: Landespressestelle Vorarlberg)
