The 2002 and 2005 flood events have highlighted the crucial importance of flood protection facilities for cultural, economic and residential areas in Austria. A new booklet released by the BMLFUW and the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV) gives examples on how effective flood protection measures can be attuned to the ecological requirements of brooks and rivers. In this practical guide for sustainable water management the interaction between water bodies and their environment, the role of plants as building material and the latest trends in soil bioengineering are described. The booklet also explores development options in watercourse management and provides the reader with the basic requirements for an economic assessment of sustainable water management measures.
