In 2002, the province of Tyrol took concrete steps and founded Wasser Tirol-Wasserdienstleistungs GmbH, a joint subsidiary of Tiroler Wasserkraft AG/TIWAG (60 %) and Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG/IKB AG (40 %). Wasser Tirol started operation in September 2003 and meanwhile has ten employees. The business is headed by the two chief executives Ernst Fleischhacker (who also is company spokesman) and Siegfried A. Ploner. The enterprise engages in project-based activities and competes for public-sector contracts awarded by local authorities and water/wastewater associations as well as for private-sector contracts from trade and industry. It supports initiatives to keep water infrastructure under regional control, prevent the drain of purchasing power and added value in water management to foreign countries and strengthen economic and social stability within the region. This integrated water management concept also seeks to foster ecological interests.
The stepping stone certainly was the two parent companies’ decision to bundle their competences in water management. Since then, the material testing facility Ötztal Bahnhof taken over by TIWAG has been transfor-med into an accredited environmental laboratory for chemical, bacteriological and physical testing of solid, liquid and gaseous substances –another vital step towards setting up a regional competence centre. The work programme spans the entire water logistics chain, ranging from investigation and conservation of water resources to the various forms of synergetic water management.
Customer services comprise project design and execution as well as plant management. Important project activities include the flood-ravaged Wiesberg power station run by Donau Chemie AG, the wastewater power station in Seefeld, Tyrol (NEPTUN 2005 award winner), the water adventure and communication project Zammer Lochputz as well as various other tasks related to drinking water supply and wastewater disposal. Wasser Tirol also assists its own parent companies with expert advice, as is well illustrated by the drinking water power station project at Schreyerbach.
