About 98 percent of the citizens of Vienna are already connected to the sewer system and after the expansion the coverage shall be 100 percent. Kossina: "The upgrading of the sewer system until 2005 is the prerequisite for the utilisation of the new purification plant. Together, these two systems provide for a maximum wastewater treatment efficiency and quality."

In addition to the upgrading of the Vienna Main Sewage Treatment Plant (EbS), relief sewers for the Danube Canal, the Wien River and the Liesingbach shall be built. Particularly the bad water quality of the Liesingbach shall profit from the new Liesing Valley Main Sewer and the closing down of the treatment plant Blumental. To achieve these objectives approx. 945 million EUR shall be invested in the framework of the Vienna Water Pollution Control Programme until 2005.

After the upgrading the Vienna Main Sewage Treatment Plant (EbS) will have the largest secondary clarification tank of Europe. The 15 new aeration tanks have a diameter of 64 metres each. The clarification tank capacity will be 500.000 m3. The purification efficiency will improve to 95 percent, since the nitrogen concentration in wastewater is reduced by 70 percent.

"Denitrification in the secondary clarification tank further reduces nitrates in the discharge and wastewater can thus be optimally treated," says Kossina pointing at the environmentally sound efficiency of the plant. The new treatment plant will restore Water Quality Class II (bathing water quality) in the East of Vienna. The complete Austrian section of the Danube will thus be depolluted by 2005. (22 May, 2002)
