In 1983 KWAHO was registered as an indigenous NGO under the Kenya Societies Act with the prime objective to assist Kenyan communities to realize water within manageable distances, and to allow women to attend properly to the other needs of their family and community from the time gained.
Much of Kenya's population is living in the rural, arid and semi-arid parts of the country without much access to adequate drinking water and basic sanitation. Like many other African countries, Kenya faces serious difficulties in trying to help its people meet the need for water that is reasonably close, and above all safe, as well as providing some form of basic sanitary facilities to eliminate common disease transmission routes.
KWAHO's strategies
Over the years, KWAHO has given active support to a large number of water related and sanitation projects. Its implementation strategies promote community involvement in project identification, planning, training, implementation and management.
The basis of this approach has been to ensure that each community recognizes the benefit of improved water supply and sanitation systems, has the necessary skills to operate and maintain these systems, has access to spare parts, can finance the operational and maintenance costs and will assimilate complementary health education and behaviour.
