Water Reservoirs and Importance for Water Supply
Lozorno Water Reservoir

In Slovakia, in certain circles of nature protectors, there has been a trend for more than ten years against construction of water reservoirs. Unfortunately, this has become certain fashionable trend and it is implied mostly without any deeper analysis. Because of lack of knowledge of the problems, orientation to local water resources is forced in supply of drinking water.

Lozorno Water Reservoir

With the aim to prevent construction of any water reservoirs, construction of water reservoirs is hindered in spite of the fact that they are aimed to give to the population good drinking water in places where no other water resources are available or if they are, their capacity and quality is insufficient.

Water reservoirs allow smooth supply of the population by drinking water also in places where the resources of underground water are unsuitable or insufficient (the economically most feasible way of transport of water), allow supply to a large number of consumption sites, allow regulated supply of drinking water (it is taken from a resource and only actual consumption is supplied to the site), ensure supply of good quality watery.

Without the Hrinova, Klenovec, and Malinec water reservoirs, it would be impossible to ensure development of water mains in the southern districts of the Banska Bystrica region, the Bukovec and Starina water reservoirs are inevitable resources of water in the East Slovakia region, the regions of upper Nitra and Ziar nad Hronom are supplied from the Turcek water reservoir, the regions of Kysuce and Zilina from the Nova Bystrica water reservoir.

The capacity of water reservoirs represents e.g. in Eastern Slovakia 22 % of the balance capacity of exploited resources, in the Banska Bystrica region its is even 29 %.
