Global water problems require the bundling of efforts by all stakeholders. With its focus on science, young professionals, women and municipalities, the 2008 Congress in Vienna has set new standards

Precisely forty years ago, the World Water Congress hosted by IWSA – one of the two precursors of IWA – moved the Austrian capital into the limelight of international water management. This conference merely focused on water supply issues and was therefore a lot smaller; but due to the growing complexity of water issues all players of the water sector gradually had to become involved.

Two important milestones have marked the way: the merger of the two associations IWSA and IAWQ (wastewater) into the International Water Association (IWA) in 2000, and the 2008 IWA World Water Congress held in Vienna (7 – 12 September) this year. This most recent event has hit an all-time record among all IWA conferences in terms of content, expert and industry participation, and media presence.
