 Ways to Optimising Small Hydropower Plants

Electricity demand is soaring. From an Austrian perspective, the only way out of the dilemma – along with the Kyoto climate protection targets – is the harnessing of hydropower.


As a consequence, environmentalists and the drinking water industry fear that soon the last watercourse will be sacrified for the purpose of producing electricity, such as through small hydropower plants (SHP). This is one of many contemporary conflicts of use, which can only be solved by cutting energy demand growth (each of us is called upon to contribute!) and creating new technologies.

In terms of the latter, aqua press has asked experts what can be one to optimise existing and new facilities both energetically and ecologically. There are indeed plenty of technical options! Read our new series “Ways to Optimising Small Hydropower Plants” what refined options are already available to SHP planners, builders and operators today and which future opportunities may yet appear on the horizon.

aqua press will present specific case studies mainly from Austria, with comments by reputed SHP experts. On today’s agenda: a project aimed at optimising Salzburg AG’s SHP plant Gamp built in 1928. Bernhard Pelikan, university professor and President of the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA), will comment on the project. His research team at the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU) is currently developing indicators for evaluating the sustainability of SHP plants.
