 Tisza Catchment Area
Thirty-two Billion Forints in Four Years for the Dams
Flood at Vásárosnamény, November 2001

Floods threaten half of the 93 thousand square kilometers territory of Hungary. The most dangerous the River Tisza and the smaller rivulets, even streams, brooks, creeks.

River Tisza enters Hungary from Ukraine. The year 1988 was extremely rainy, and for November from the about two dozen affluence River Bodrog (catchment area in Ukraine and Slovakia) and Szamos (catchment area in Rumania) played deciding role.
The reason – according to the specialists – was not only the unusual amount of precipitation, but also the soil erosion due to cutting the woods in the Carpathian Mountains.

The ever-highest flood mark on Upper Tisza was registered in November 2001: 943 cm at Vásárosnamény, and 958 cm at Tivadar. For sake of avoiding the persistent threat of flood, the Hungarian Government has signed a treaty with Ukraine for establishing an early flood monitoring system, providing HUF 100 million (EUR 400.000) for this sake.

The Hungarian Government has reinforced 35,6 km dams immediately, decided to strengthen 225 km more, 64 km of it urgently. In four years HUF 32 billion (EUR 130 million) has been sent for flood protection in the Tisza Catchment Area.
