Sewage Sludge: Residual Product Turns into Energy Source

The new BIOZONE®-AD technology by VA TECH WABAG helps to further reduce sludge loads and to increase the amount of sewer gas recovered

Mechanical-biological wastewater treatment has come to be acknowledged as a proven state-of-the-art technology. But apart from purifying wastewater, it also generates contaminated sewage sludge, an unwanted by-product that needs to be disposed of in an eco-friendly and cost-effective manner.

Proper sewage sludge treatment is therefore an important part of an optimised wastewater treatment system; if stored without prior treatment, it takes up an incredible amount of landfill space. Landfills also generate greenhouse gases such as methane, which is 21 times more active than carbon dioxide.

Experts agree that anaerobic sewage sludge stabilisation proves the best solution for large and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants (capacity of 100,000 p.e. or higher) in terms of cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.
