Hydropower Works from the Beginning of the 20th Century
The first power stations whose generators were driven by water turbines were built on the territory of Slovakia from the year 1902.

During the years 1902 – 1908, small water power stations were built in the upper river Hron (water power stations of Podbrezova, Lopej, Piesok, Dubova, Banska Bystrica) and in eastern Slovakia (water power stations of Presov, Roznava, Kezmarok, Spisska Nova Ves, Rakovec).

Many of these water power stations have been in operation until today. In the year 1918, construction of a larger water work began in the Jasensky brook and a high-pressure water power station in Jasenie.
