 Reconstruction of Sealing
Cierny Vah Repumping Water Power Station - Control Field with Sealing Geomembrane
Information on continuing degradation of asphaltic concrete casing of the upper reservoir of the Cierny Vah Repumping Water Power Station (RWPS) and on the possibilities available in repair thereof. During the study works on proposed repair, it was decided to build, on the slope of the upper reservoir, a control field with a sealing geomembrane, for monitoring the effect of the operation of the upper reservoir to the whole sealing system.

It was proposed to monitor: the effects of ice on the geomembrane and the anchoring system at fluctuating level in the reservoir; the effects of variation of temperatures to the whole sealing system in operating the reservoirs; non-permeability of the sealing system; tension of the geomembrane by possible pressure of water and effects of the wind; function of the secondary sealing; difference of the ambient temperature and the temperature under the geomembrane; degradation rate of asphaltic concrete sealing under the geomembrane.

The control field was situated on the south-eastern slope, approximately at the site most affected by wind waves. The max. operational level is at the elevation 116,00 m n. m, the control field is situated between the elevations 1 153,50 m n. m. a 1 157 m n. m. The size of the control field is 7.7 m x 7.7 m and has the following elements: water-proof synthetic geomembrane with the width 2.5 mm; basic vertical anchoring of the geomembrane.

Along the whole circumpherence of the control field, there are installed: a double vertical and horizontal circumpheral sealing: primary circumpheral sealing which represents also an anchoring element; secondary circumpheral sealing in the distance of 40 cm from the primary sealing; discharge of soaked or condensed water, if any, by gravitation through the space between the geomembrane and the base made of asphaltic concrete; monitoring system allowing continual monitoring of the sealing system via the network of sensors.

The task of the control field is to verify all components of the sealing with the geomembrane, in real climatic conditions, and in various operational conditions of the Cierny Vah RWPS. The results of verification and monitoring of the control field shall serve as a basis for decision on realisation of the general haulage of the sealing of the reservoir, in order to ensure complete and long-term operation.
