The Austrian capital consistently steps up its use of renewable energies. Ambitious climate targets and soaring electricity prices not only spark investment in large-scale projects, such as the forest biomass power plant in the city district of Simmering, but turn also small hydropower into an economically beneficial option. ebswien hauptkläranlage, for example, built a Kaplan turbine into its outlet structure in July this year. Under the umbrella of “StErnE – Strom aus Erneuerbarer Energie” – a key project on renewable energy use within the KliP II climate programme also including solar energy, photovoltaics and wind power – the wastewater plant operators seek to cut their traditional fuel consumption by 10% until 2011.
The Vienna Waterworks have also decided to optimise the power consumption of their 15 “drinking water power plants” (DWP) along the two Vienna Spring Water Mains (VSWM), which were originally destined to reduce surge pressure in the pipeline system. A brand-new DWP is now under construction along the 1st VSWM at Nasswald, in the Schneealpe area of Lower Austria.
