The competence network (K-net) WATERPOOL was founded in late 2003 in the framework of a technology offensive launched by the Austrian federal government. The focus of the initiative promoted by the Austrian Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth, the Austrian provinces of Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol, the Republic of Croatia, Slovenia and the Italian province of Pordenone was to foster sustainable water resource management and knowledge acquisition. With currently 86 industry and research partners, WATERPOOL has since then developed into one of Central Europe’s major competence networks. As public-sector commitment was limited in time, the organisation of the competence network had to be restructured. This reorganisation process started last year and was completed in May 2010.
The new WATERPOOL Competence Network GmbH, equally apportioned into industry and research partners, has an even stronger international market orientation. The partners are: JOANNEUM Research (17.5% interest), Graz University of Technology (15%), University of Graz (10%), Facoltà Agraria Università degli Studi di Udine (5%), Rudarsko Geoloski Fakultet, Univerziteta u Beogradu (2.5%), Graz AG (15%), Wasser Tirol (15%), Pöyry-Infra GmbH (10%), International Association of Waterworks in the Danube Catchment Area/IAWD (5%), and Water Service GmbH/ WSG (5 %). The initial capital contribution of the new company is € 200,000.
