 Complaints, But Compromise Prevails
Austria’s first National Water Resource Management Plan (NWRMP) was submitted to the EU authorities end of March. First impressions show that the Environment Minister has more or less reconciled the conflicting interests

Environment Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich, together with Christoph Wagner (President of Kleinwasserkraft Österreich) and Gerhard Heilingbrunner (President of Umweltdachverband), presented the first Austrian National Water Resource Management Plan (NWRMP) and its legal ordinance end of March.

The associated ordinances establishing quality targets for the ecological status and the chemical composition of groundwater are thereby also put into effect. This has enormous implications for water resource and environmental protection, flood control, inland navigation, hydropower and of course drinking water supply. Austria, as a matter of fact, derives its drinking water mostly from spring water and groundwater resources.
