The EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) seeks to strengthen the community of states and promotes regional development. This also provides new chances for environmental and water management

Not only has the European Union plunged into a political crisis. The ambitious goal of making the Community the most dynamic economic area worldwide, too, appears to be a distant memory. To cope with either challenge, the EU is now increasingly building on the strength and innovative power of its regions.

So the joint proposal of Austria and Romania to launch a EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR), based on the existing model of a EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), came at just the right time. Luckily, the idea fell on fertile ground. In June 2009, the European Council sent a request for implementation to the European Commission. Since then the EUSDR has been under way, drawing support from the comprehensive EU 2020 Strategy.
