With an estimated cost of € 200 million, the “Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube East of Vienna” (IREP) is one of the biggest river engineering projects ever planned by the Republic of Austria. Its aim is to improve the framework conditions for river navigation, and to stabilise the Danube riverbed and thereby prevent the lowering of the groundwater table in the Donau-Auen National Park. The project also envisages a number of purely ecological measures, including the expansion of the riverbank.
Due to its holistic approach respecting the entire Danube river course, the project is also supported by the EU. “Österreichische Wasserstraßengesellschaft – via donau” operates this project on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT).
