 Krpelany water work
Krpelany water work, which was built up in 1951 – 1957 is the first control stage of upper Váh cascade: Krpelany – Sucany – Lipovec. The dam profile is located above Krpeľany village and namely 7.6 km below junction of Orava and Vah rivers.

Major sites of the water work are as follows: earth dam, functional work solved fascinewise, idle outflow, hydroelectric power plant and waste canal. The dam together with the functional work create a storage reservoir performing the task of daily flow regulation. The total volume of the reservoir is 8.3 million m3, of which storage space is 4.5 million m3 and dead storage space 3.8 million m3. The reservoir backwater length is 6.0 km and the maximum flooded area 1.26 km2.

The purpose of water work is electric energy production, daily balancing of flows for peak use in all derivation cascade. Right side derivative channel 17.2 km long with capacity of 210 m3.s-1 leads from the hydroelectric power plant, at which the other two stages: Sucany a Lipovec are built up. The total cascade installed capacity is 97 MW and total production of electric energy in an average year is 235.4 GWh. The length of guaranteed peak is 5,0 h.d-1.

Earth dam
Earth dam with height of 15.25 m above valley dam and length in the crest of 535.0 m is built up from gravel material, which was mined from construction excavation for the hydroelectric power plant and the fascine. Maximum dam width in footing is 90.5 m, the width in the crest is 10 m and dam cubature is 390 thousand m3. It has a clay sealing at upstream slope, which is connected to the concrete sealing screen at the dam footing. The concrete screen in which an injection tunnel is founded 2 to 2.5 m to the impervious foot– slate. Chemical injection was performed from the injection tunnel into foot and this by water glass and cement solution. Clay sealing is protected in upstream slope by concrete paving, concrete at the place, 50 cm thick in level fluctuation area and 15 cm thick below minimum level.

Fascine
The fascine, which represents the functional work has three fields each of which is 12.0 m wide. The fields are dammed up by the segment with damming height of 10 m. Flow Q100 may be diverted by two fields. The three fascine fields will divert up to 2380 m3.s-1 at maximum level. The segments in upper side have 2 m high shutters. The total capacity of hood shutters is 207 m3.s-1 at maximum level. Control mechanisms of damming structures are located in cabins at columns.

Revision and injection tunnel is located below fascine work, hydroelectric power plant and earth dam, which terminates at the right Vah bank. The tunnel is extended by 40 m into the slope at the left fascine side. Injection screen was made from the tunnel below the fascine for purpose of binding the dam into the left slope.

Idle outflow
The idle outflow is located between the hydroelectric power plant and the fascine as a separate site and serves for water leaking into the channel when the hydroelectric power plant does not operate. 12 m wide and 3.25 m high segment dams up the outlet. Idle outflow capacity is 210 m3.s-1, that corresponds to turbine absorption capacity. The scraper wall with coarse rakes for catching floating articles is ejected before the idle outflow. The grooves for additional damming operated by a crane are located in the columns before the segment. Fishway and fish lifter are located in the left wall of the idle outflow.

Hydroelectric power plant
Hydroelectric power plant of fascine type is located in the right fascine side, between the earth dam and the idle outflow. It includes of three blocks by 17 m and assembling area. The vertical adjustable-blade-type turbine with absorption capacity of 70 m3.s-1 is located in each block and the generator with power of 11.5 MVA, while the installed power is 24.8 MW and annual production is 57.,5 GWh.
