 Vah - hydroenergy potential
Cierny Vah water work- part 3
Cierny Vah, the pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant serves particularly for hydraulic energy accumulation during electric system load reduction. It provides for use of primary energy of the Cierny Vah section in area of the lower reservoir besides fulfilling the main purpose.

Surface power plant
The surface power plant is a part of the dam and is located at the far side of the valley. The power plant building consists of three twin blocks with six vertical pumping units of assembling block for revision of the transformer and the building.

Each high-pressure pumping unit has down accumulation two-stage unit pump with impeller wheel diameter of 2,600 mm, designed for maximum transport height of 440.5 m, while pumped volume reaches 21 m3.s-1. Moreover it has gear hydraulic coupling, Francis turbine with impeller wheel diameter of 2,600 mm, designed for net fall of 428 m.

Natural flow of Cierny Vah is processed by low-pressure adjustable-blade-type turbine with impeller wheel diameter of 1,100 mm and alternator 0,8 MWA.

The guaranteed duration of daily operation of the pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant is 5.53 hours at 8 hours pumping duration per day. Accumulated volume reserve enables to extend operation up to 5.71 hors per day if necessary.

Major parameters of the hydroelectric power plant (see table)

Drain facility of the lower reservoir is on the right of the hydroelectric power plant in the functional block 24.0 m long. It consists of undammed crest overflow 2 x 5.0 m wide with capacity of 52 m3.s-1, two bottom outlets with profile of 5.0 x 2.0 m, which are closed by segment shutters with capacity of 2 x 67.0 m3.s-1 at minimum level. Moreover it includes the pipe of 1.0 m diameter batching sanitary flow with capacity of 4 – 5 m3.s-1, which has needle shutter.

Earth part of the lower reservoir dam with the crest cambered by 2.0 m above maximum level has two wings: the right one 123.5 m long and the left one 90.0m long. The dam has massive medium concrete sealing, which is bind into rock ground.

Major parameters of the lower reservoir dam (see table)

Waste canal below the lower reservoir 0.99 km long is adjusted for 100- year flow of 67 m3.s-1.

The lower reservoir
Building up the dam and thereby Cierny Vah valley damming up in rkm 8.7 the reservoir was created, backwater of which reaches the length of 2.0 km.

Major reservoir parameters (see table)
