Considerable improvements have been made in the field of wastewater treatment in the last few years. All important cleansing programmes (lost cleansing) were replaced by programmed "CIP-Cleansing" (Cleansing in Place). A number of minor technical innovations such as the optimisation of controls and processes showed remarkable improvements. Considerable amounts of drinking and industrial water and of detergents could be saved.
In every Berglandmilch plant wastewater is collected in a neutralisation container and neutralised or purified prior to discharge.
Improvements are not limited to the reduction of wastewater amounts, but also include the reduction of the pollution load. Knowing that wastewater from dairy companies is mainly polluted by the raw material milk and other product losses has prompted the efforts to achieve improvements in this field.
Thus the net product is increased on the one hand and the costs for wastewater are reduced on the other.
And these are the results of innovation at Berglandmilch:
- Water consumption could be cut by 50 %
- The pollution load (CSB) could be cut by 30 to 70 % in only four years. Innovation at Berglandmilch is not simply happening through the installation of the latest technologies, but by the implementation of co-ordinated measures:
- Identifying strategic goals (annual reduction of water consumption of 5 %)
- Creating a vital environmental management system and environmental controlling
- Developing the ecological awareness of employees with respect to the handling of water
- Analysing all the processes and programmes as to their environmental impacts, especially in the field of water and wastewater
- Optimising and streamlining the processes in the entire group
- Implementing purposive technical and innovative solutions in the existing plants.
