Since 1995, twelve projects of the LIFE-Nature Protection Programmes supported by the European Union have been implemented, nine of them are explicitly dedicated to wetland protection. In 1999 another four domestic LIFE-projects for wetlands were classified by the EU as being eligible for promotion. In the valley of the Lafnitz, the border river between the Austrian provinces of Burgenland and Styria, preparations (between the towns of Loipersdorf and Fürstenfeld) are also being made for another Ramsar nomination. Parallel to a LIFE-project the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) has supported a new project of the LEADER II-subsidies programme for the development of public relations, visitors’ information, for the creation of a visitors’ guiding system and for an information centre.
