At present, there is an invitation to tender issued for a flood protection project with estimated construction costs of € 5 million. Works shall begin in autumn and are expected to be completed by summer 2004. In last year’s flood the south bank of the port basin was half a metre under water. This caused damage in the port area amounting to a total of € 2.5 million. A structure is now planned, which shall consist of protection dams and a mobile transverse lock facility adjacent to the road embankment of freeway S5. This lock is integrated into the dam and is extended when a flood is expected. The dam is thereby protected against the backwater of the Danube.
If the Danube reaches a level of 194 metres above sea level, navigation on the Danube is stopped. As soon as all ships have reached the protection port, the port basin is closed by locking the sliding gate. In the flood of August 2002 the water level of the Danube rose to 196 metres above sea level. The lock gate will provide the same safety for the south bank as for the northern part (197 metres), which was secured in the course of the construction of the barrage Altenwörth.
