Situated on a side arm of the Danube, the Gogosu project was awarded to VA Tech Hydro in addition to the Iron Gates I and II ventures. Based at the same reservoir, Gogosu shares many similarities with the Iron Gates II project, which comprised refurbishment and modernization of 8 bulb turbines and generators.
Gogosu will see additional two units of the same size refurbished, uprated from 28 MW to 32.5 MW. The refurbishment will reinvigorate performance, resulting in significant improvement in availability, increase in output and extension of equipment lifetime.
VA Tech Hydro will continue the manufacturing partnership scheme which involved significant manufacturing taking place in Romania. Manufacturing partnerships allow VA Tech Hydro to focus on engineering, project management and procedures for site supervision and ensures on the other hand high quality supplies from surrounding areas.
Model pre-tests for both the Gogosu contract and the Iron Gates II project were performed successfully under the supervision and participation of Hidroelectrica’s delegates in May, 2003, at the independent Hydraulic Test Laboratory in Lausanne. Subsequently, one unit per year will be rehabilitated over the next decade.
Following the modernization, output will be increased by approximately 15% and installation of new core components will increase efficiency by more than 1%. As a result, the utilization of the Danube River’s hydropower will be improved, increasing the ability to meet peaks in electricity demand.
The project, which will potentially provide jobs in the region for the next ten years, will be funded from energy sales.
