Raising and Strengthening of Protective Dam in the River Morava
Protection flood line of the Morava river under reconstruction

The engineering and geologic survey revealed that the protective dams were built and raised in the past in several stages, from local materials, and therefore their geologic structure is rather variable.

Reconstruction of the dam on the Morava at Suchohrad

The long lasting intensive precipitations in July 1997 resulted in culmination of flows which were almost at the rate of 1 % of probability of occurrence. Such hydrologic situation occurred also in the river basin of Morava. In the whole section of km 12.50 to 52.00, there were defects in the dam, characterized by leakage through the dame and springs below the dam to the distance of max. 10 m behind the air foot of the dame.

On the basis of the geodetic survey of the local conditions and the engineering/geologic survey, renovation measures were proposed in order to ensure security of the dams. Reconstruction of the left-side protective dam included raising of the top and the embankment walls, sealing the bank of the dam, and securing stability of the cover of the water foot of the dam. Raising of the bank was made by raising the top and the air bank of the dame according to international agreements by 0.70 m above the standard water level.

For stability of the dam, in selected sections, sealing was proposed of the body of the protective dam by an underground sealing wall built of the top of the raised dam, in some cases the original one. Locally, sealing of the dam and the bedrock to the miocene clays is proposed. In the section of the embankment wall of the villages of Zahorska Ves and Gajare, fluxional injection was realised, bound to the miocene clays. The renovation works included also reconstruction of the existing dam flodgates.

The improvements of the current works – in the section of the protective dam from km 12.50 to 22.00 are the built sections of underground sealing walls and the fluxional injection bound to the miocene clay. In the sxection of the protective dam from km 22.00 to 33.00, stabilisation walls were built and in the whole projected extent, an underground sealing wall is built form the raised top of the protective dam. The continuing works in reconstruction of the protective dame in the river Morava in the section from km 33.00 to 52.00 by raising the top of the dam and building stabilisation walls. In this section, an anti-vibration underground wall is built from the original dam top, which is mostly bound to the quarterly covering in the whole projected scope.
