In addition, the Port of Vienna manages the core of the Danube Island for the City of Vienna and all public properties on the right bank of the Danube between the Floridsdorf Bridge and the port area Freudenau, i.e. a total of 3.5 million m2. Among the companies located there are 32 forwarders, among them branches of four of the six biggest domestic carriers. It certainly is the central location on the Danube that is interesting for many companies, but also the vicinity to the eastbound highway and the airport, and the immediate connection to the central shunting station Kledering.
The port Albern was originally established as a grain port for the supply of Vienna. For some years now, the five grain storehouses with a total capacity of 90,000 ton have also been an important location for grain exports. Subsequently, the area became the first freight traffic centre of Vienna.
The port Freudenau, originally a protection and winter port, is today the largest inland container terminal in Europe. In the duty free area Freudenau, there is the car terminal with more than 160,000 m2 of open space with a direct connection to all the transport means.
Up to 10,000 cars can be stored there at the same time. In addition to professional discharging and storage, the vehicles are also deprocessed and cleaned there.
Mineral oil products have the biggest share in ship cargoes at the ports of Vienna. They are handled at the Ölhafen Lobau, where most of the mineral oil companies are located.
In addition to large-scale shipping, the Port of Vienna is also proving for the great number of motorboat drivers. A marina for 500 motorboats was established using the latest technology. It is operated by the Marina Wien.
The total port area was designed according to the latest technological state-of-the-art. The central idea was to create comfortable conditions for berth renters. (Source: aqua press Int. 06/99)
