Adcon Radio Solution Minimises Pipe Losses
The tasks of a water pipeline association do not only include the supply of the population with drinking water, but also the cost-efficient operation of plants and their maintenance.

The existing network of the WLV encompasses almost the entire Northern Burgenland and supplies 69 municipalities with more than 150.000 inhabitants. A considerable challenge, which requires from the association to keep more than 1,600 km of supply and local lines in an optimal condition.

Until recently this task was accomplished by a team of eight, who had to check every single of the 300 delivery shafts and metering units. Nevertheless, it was not always possible to immediately spot smaller pipe breaks without the leakage of water.

In order to reduce the enormous amount of work and at the same time to increase the efficiency of monitoring, the WLV has installed in the past 18 months an ADCON radio measuring network consisting of 180 measuring or relay stations for large-scale meter reading, in order to allow an ongoing monitoring of the distribution network.

Since the ADCON system is organised as a network, data from even the most remote measurement points can be easily collected. The data from the large-scale metering units are transferred every 15 minutes to the head office in Eisenstadt.

Particularly the short data transmitting intervals are a major progress, since the WLV is now able to immediately react to failures and thus to reduce losses drastically, and on the other hand to avoid a possible undersupply e.g. due to leakage.

In contrast to the monitoring method used in the past, the ADCON technology has been able to save approx. two thirds of labour time and over 6,000 km of driving per year; at the same time, pipe leaks could be detected up to 95 percent more quickly! The total amount of water losses saved this way amounted to 100,000 m3 per year.

Next year, the WLV plans to further expand the network with ADCON products – one of the leading suppliers of wireless data trans- mission technology based on digital radio communication.
