 Negative Record in 2003
For 100 Years the Lowest Water Level of the Danube at Budapest
Photo: Népszabadság

In 2002 the water engineers had to fight with extremely high, over 800-cm flood at Budapest. In this year, in 2003, the water management has measured the lowest level in 100-year period: only 102 cm, 7%.

Last year, with several droughts in summer, the average level was 333cm, with minimum level of 143cm. In 2003 until July the average level reached only 257cm with a low of 102cm.

The fluctuation in water level on the Hungarian rivers falls between 8 and 10 meters. On the Hungarian part of the Danube there are about 30 fords. At Gönyű, Nyergesújfalu, Dömös, Vác, and Dunaföldvár the depths of the water is no more than 1,6-1,9m.

It means, the cargo ships cannot be loaded with full load, and they had to wait to give way each other.

The situation is not better on the other natural waters as well. The water yield is on Tisza 10-20%, on rivers Hernád, Maros, Raab 1.6%. In Balaton the amount is 21% with record low level and in Lake Velencei 27%.
