This symposium took place in September 2003 in Spittal/Drau and focused on the topic "Water Management and EU Water Framework Directive – implementation by the example of LIFE projects". In the context of this conference the LIFE project "Upper Drau River" completed in the Year of Freshwater 2003 was presented. With financial support by the European Union, the "LIFE Project Auenverbund Obere Drau" was implemented by the acquisition of flood plain forests and by means of enlargement measures in the Upper Drau riverbed. The ongoing depression of the Drau was halted, the straight river line was structured, and flood protection measures could be implemented at the same time as nature conservation projects.
Furthermore, the effects of the EU Water Framework Directive on water protection management were discussed.
Approximately 300 experts working in the field of water protection management from eight European states participated in the symposium. The conference volumes 1 + 2 of the River Engineering Conference are available in German in PDF format under "Downloads".
