 Disinfection of Water by Chlorination
The effect of different factors (chlorine dose, contact time, pH, TOC, temperature) on formation of trihalomethanes (THM) and chloroacetic acids (CAA) was investigated.

The surface water with natural organic matter was chlorinated by means of diluted solution of technical sodium hypochlorite. Isolation of THM from water was performed by "head space" SPME (Solid Phase Microextraction).

Chloroacetic acids were isolated from aci- dified water sample by liquid/liquid extraction with methyl-tert-butyl ether and then derivatizated with boron trifluoride in methanol to produce methyl esters.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used as a final analytical method.

The concentrations of THMs and CAAs after chlorination increase with increasing chlorine dose, contact time, TOC value and temperature. The pH value affects the concentration of disinfection by-products according to their character.
