The primary purpose of the water work is to supply water, namely, to serve as a complementary source to the system of Hrinova and Klenovec single-purpose water reservoirs of south Slovakia, supplying municipal conurbations of Lucenec, Filakovo, Rimavska Sobota, etc.
The reservoir controls Sp = 82.3 km2 of basin which receives 866 mm of rainfall water as a long-term average. Discharge data in the dam profile can be described by the following flow rates: Qmin = 0.05 m3.s_1, Qa = 0.850 m3.s_1, Q1 % = 76.0 m3.s_1.
The reservoir provides make-up water of Qnc = 0.45 to 0.500 m3.s_1 for both branches of the water-supply system.
The Hmax = 50 m embankment dam is a wide bottom land of river Ipel, valley width at the top of dam is L = 620 m, thereof the bottom land is 300 m. The steeper left bank has a 20 – 22° gradient, the right-bank gradient is more gentle (10 – 12°).
At the upstream toe of the dam, off the dam wall, stands the tower of the associated water-service facility. The facility contains: shaft spillway, water intake piping at several levels, and bottom gate; the gallery within the tower runs on two levels: the upper one is a corridor (with intake and bottom spillway piping) and the lower one is an outlet channel from the spillway.
The Malinec water work is a significant complementary source of the Hrinova – Klenovec - Malinec single-purpose water reservoir system supplying water to group water-supply system.
