Ecological Sanitation (in short EcoSan) stands for closed-loop concepts in urban sanitation, which in addition to water supply also comprise the collection and disposal of solid and liquid wastes. The efficiency of Eco- San is usually assessed by means of criteria such as the reduction of health risks and environmental pollution. Closed-loop concepts also add an ecosystematic dimension by defining wastes and wastewater as resources within the system. To evaluate their efficiency, therefore, further criteria such as recovery rate, energy demand or entropy minimisation are used for reference.
