Two Years of Water Counselling in Salzburg: A Success Story

The Environment Ministry’s water quality check revealed that water from private wells is often of poor quality. Now there is free advice on how to resolve this problem

An international comparison shows that a large percentage of Austrian households are connected to the public water supply system. Yet more than one million people (source: Ministry of Environment/BMLFUW) have their own private wells.

Recent results from the bacteriological water testing programme launched by BMLFUW in conjunction with its partners AQA and Austrian Post have now revealed that only 20 percent of all private water samples are in fact unconditionally fit for human consumption.

34 percent of the samples exceed indicator values and are therefore only conditionally fit for human consumption. Roughly half of all analysed samples fall below the health risk threshold and are not fit for consumption.
