A clear Vision of Wastewater Treatment

Last year as many as 250 groups of visitors were drawn to Vienna’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant (MWTP). Domestic and foreign experts, students, school children, – all of them stood in awe of the new facility, which since its upgrade has earned itself a

reputation as one of the world’s largest and most modern wastewater treatment plants.

Public communication activities are mainly addressed to the school kids and the general population of Vienna. The goal is to point out to these target groups in a clear and easy-to-grasp manner how important wastewater treatment is in protecting our waters and the whole living environment.

Plant operator Entsorgungsbetriebe Simmering (EbS) has installed a special information centre for this purpose, which was only recently completed. The tour around the centre starts off with an overview of the sewer system, the solids in sewage and mechanical cleaning.

An array of glass containers display solid matter and other rubbish which storm water runoff from the city streets washes into the sewer system or which are flushed down the household drains into the sewer to be carried off to the MWTP. The section on mechanical cleaning describes how this rubbish is finally removed from the sewage.

The second part of the tour is dedicated to biological cleaning of sewage in the aeration tanks. Microorganisms are depicted in oversize format to highlight the prominent role which biological cleaning plays in the entire process. The next section illustrates how the wastewater is clarified after undergoing biological cleaning, and explains the details of process engineering and sewage sludge treatment.

The tour around the information centre ends with a presentation of the various interactions unfolding between metropolitan Vienna and its surrounding environment. The unrivalled highlight is a huge picture of the Donauauen wetlands, which gives the onlooker the impression that he is surrounded by green wilderness.

Along the edge of the ceiling runs a headline which about reads “Wastewater treatment at Vienna’s Main Wastewater Treatment Plant: a vital contribution to the protection of water”. When taking this last look up to the top, every visitor should be convinced of what great efforts the plant operators put into protecting and conserving the environment.

After all, the Danube’s waters leave the city area of Vienna with the same good quality with which they enter it. And this adds a double meaning to the EbS slogan “Alles klar!” (“It’s all clear”). For more information please visit the homepage www.ebs.co.at
