EU Directive to Provide a Strong Impetus for Growth

The European market for water pollution monitoring instruments is expected to grow considerably in the years to come.

Frost & Sullivan, the international marketing consulting company predicts revenues to rise from USD 311.8 million in 1999 to USD 421.2 million in 2005.

According to the marketing experts, the driving factors are increasing concern over water quality and stricter implementation of tighter EU environmental pollution control legislation. All these factors boost the demand for water pollution monitoring instruments.

The approaching 2005 deadline for the implementation of the Urban Wastewater Directive (UWWT) is particularly expected to provide a strong impetus for growth.

In terms of product types, the market is dominated by pH, ORP and conductivity meters (on-line and portable/hand-held) (revenue share of 43.6 percent in 1999), followed by BOD (biological oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand) and TOC (total organic carbon) meters (15.1 percent) and ammonium, nitrate and phosphate analysers (13.1 percent).

It is expected that the relative importance of the markets for pH, ORP and conductivity meters, and for DO meters in the total market will dwindle in future years. This is said to also apply to meters for measuring dissolved oxygen.

The market segments promising the most dynamic growth potential include BOD, COD and TOC analysers, nutrient analysers and multi-parameter systems. In future years, a growing demand for automation is likely to encourage growth in the market for sophisticated on-line analysers.

A traditional major customer for these instruments is the public sector. This still applies for countries such as Spain, Belgium, Greece and Ireland, which have yet to fully implement programmes to upgrade waste water treatment facilities.

In countries such as Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands, where the municipal markets are relatively mature, the industrial sector of the market is expected to exhibit particularly good growth.

A number of trends in customer requirements are leading to an increasing emphasis of software design, which is particularly relevant in the determination of the speed of analysis and its accuracy.

Customers increasingly seek instruments that contribute to the total effectiveness of the operation by making the enterprise more competitive. (Source: aqua press Int. 01/2000)
