The initiative forms part of the EU Renewable Energy Directive and will last until 2012. The mapping of the SHP sector is partly financed with funds from the Intelligent Energy – Europe (IEE) Programme, which was kicked off in 2007 and continues until 2013.
The European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA) based in Brussels will function as coordinator for the ten partners collaborating on the Stream Map. It will be assisted in its activities by a consultant committee comprising experts from Eurelectric, EREC, HEA-E and Eur’Observer. There are plans to discuss the results with Eurostat.
The core element of the Stream Map is the setup of a centralised database, the Hydro Data Initiative (HYDI), in which also meteorological reference values will be included. The database will ultimately contain all relevant data of the 27 EU member states from 2007 onwards and shall be updated every year.
