Joining Forces for a Danube Basin Management

After the approval of a Danube River Management Plan by ICPDR delegates, a meeting of ministers shall now carry the spirit of the project into the future and determine the next steps to be taken

The transnational Danube River Basin Management Plan (DRBMP) is the backbone of efforts undertaken in the region to restore the “good status” of surface and ground water resources in keeping with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Like the WFD itself, the river basin management plans make it clear that this ambitious goal can only be achieved by a close intra- and interstate collaboration of all stakeholders.

The DRBMP assumes an exceptional position among the transnational river basin management plans because EU member states (for whom the DRBMP is binding) as well as non-EU countries (whose participation is voluntary) are actively involved in its development and implementation. The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) is in charge of coordinating DRBMP-related activities of the fourteen riparian states (plus the European Commission).
