Make Your Stake For the Future of Europe’s Rivers!

The Transnational River Basin Management Plan envisages stakeholder participation in the Danube’s management at international level. ICPDR presented the first draft of the plan in mid-May

The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires all EU member states to achieve a good status of their water bodies by the year 2015. Several non-EU countries in Southeast Europe have also agreed to adopt the WFD provisions in their national legislations.

Proposals for achieving the WFD targets at national level are contained in the (draft) National River Basin Management Plans (also read about Austria on page 20) and at international level in the Transnational River Basin Management Plans. In these management plans, detailed measures for a sustainable balance of interests between water quality, ecology, economy, and social concerns are outlined.

The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) is responsible for coordinating the Transnational River Basin Management Plan for the Danube and thus also lends support to the non-EU countries in the region. Article 14 of the EU Water Framework Directive encourages all stakeholders to actively get involved in the implementation of its provisions. The final decision on how to involve stakeholders and how to implement the WFD provisions rests with the individual states.
