Optima Lobau: Basis for Balance of Interests

The new area planning tool created within “proVision” identifies incompatibilities and enables decision-makers to prioritise their actions

Even today, the Danubian wetlands still serve a variety of interests including agriculture and forestry, flood control, hunting, and biodiversity. Not to forget their vital role as “psychotopes”, to quote Konrad Lorenz, who referred to their recreational purpose as a place where the mind and the soul can relax and unwind.

The Lobau, covering an area of 280 hectares, is the Austrian capital’s only remaining patch of wetland, which fulfills many of these tasks and with its groundwater pumping station also represents an important pillar of Vienna’s water supply.
